Emmanuel Baptist Church is starting up September 3 Greg Churchill will be coaching/instructing. Thursday Night Chess Club for all ages. 2009 Summer Chess Camps Check back next year
2009 Victoria Summer Chess Camp http://chess-math.org/camps/
Four, one week chess camps will be held this summer in Victoria. The camps are open to Victoria and region juniors who wish to improve their playing skills. The camp will focus on developing each player’s understanding of chess strategy, their tactical abilities, and their endgame knowledge. In addition, several different opening systems designed for success in tournament play will be introduced each week. The camp will be run by Greg Churchill, area chess teacher and coach. Greg has been teaching chess to junior competitors in Canada for over twenty years. Current titles held by some of Greg’s students include; regional grand prix champion, regional grade champions, regional age champions, and provincial grade champions. There will be two sessions daily. Session one, the morning session, will focus on developing skills for advanced tournament players. Material covered daily will include intermediate and advanced endings, advanced tactics, intermediate middle game planning, intermediate and advanced opening theory. Session two, the afternoon session, will focus on developing skills for beginner players. Material covered daily will include basic and intermediate endings, intermediate and advanced tactics, introduction to middle game strategy, introduction to intermediate level openings, chess notation, and tournament game recording. Both sessions will include 45-60 minutes/day of tournament play. All equipment will be provided. The tournaments will be Chess and Math rated. Attending players should have a complete knowledge of all chess and tournament rules. Prior tournament experience is expected Players may attend both sessions. The afternoon session is designed for junior players of beginning and intermediate tournament strength. Attending players should have a basic knowledge of all rules of chess, and how to checkmate the opposing king. Some prior tournament experience is recommended but not required. Costs $70/week/session. $125/week/both sessions. Dates week one, july 6-10; week 2, july 13-17; week 3, august 17-21; week 4, august 24-28. Chess Camp at Sea
This Alaska cruise combines a trip to Alaska and a Chess Camp at Sea with GM Anka. The cruise will stop in Victoria on August 27th. A blitz tournament is planned for 12 noon on August 27th. GM Anka is expected to play. Online registration is free. Onsite $5.
