Summer 2011 Camp with Greg Churchill
Six, one week chess camps will be held this summer in Victoria. The camps are open to juniors who wish to improve their playing skills. The camp will focus on developing each player’s understanding of chess strategy, their tactical abilities, and their endgame knowledge. In addition, several different opening systems designed for success in tournament play will be introduced each week. The camp will be run by Greg Churchill, area chess teacher and coach. Greg has been teaching chess daily for ten years in several Victoria schools, including Rogers, Margaret Jenkins, Lake Hill, Campus View, and Frank Hobbs. In addition, he has coached many junior competitors in Canada for the past twenty years. Titles earned by some of Greg’s camp graduates include; regional grand prix champions, regional grade champions, regional age champions, provincial grade champions, and one world U10 champion. This summer, camp will begin at 9 am and conclude at noon. Material covered daily will include basic and intermediate endings, intermediate tactics, introduction to middle game strategy, introduction to intermediate level openings, chess notation, and tournament game recording. Sessions will include 45-60 minutes/day of tournament play. All equipment will be provided. The tournaments will be Chess and Math rated.
