The BC Chess Challenge was held April 6 at the Hotel Grand Pacific in Victoria. 180 players from Kindergarten to grade 12 makes this one of the largest chess tournaments to held in Victoria. Congratulations to Josh Wild ( grade 12 student from Pacific Christian) who will be traveling to Halifax for the Canadian chess challenge in May.
The Grand Pacific Open was also a great success with 120 players and special guests GM Hikaru Nakamura rated 6th in the world and WGM Nino Maisuradze from Paris, France. Many juniors stayed to compete in the GPO.
NEWRevised Policy - Please Read Parents and Guardians are responsible for the direct supervision of their child(ren). If you are not able to stay on site during the tournament please make sure you have delegated the authority for direct supervision of your Child(ren) to another adult who will be on site. Please make sure your child(ren) and delegated adult knows your phone number including cell phone if you need to leave the tournament site. The Tournament Director(s) and Organizer(s) are not able to provide direct supervision. Most Junior Chess Tournaments end between 1 and 3pm. Tournaments may end sooner or later than these estimates depending on how fast the rounds are completed in each section.

The BC Chess Challenge (Provincial Championships by grade) will be held April 6 at the Hotel Grand Pacific. This tournament is open to qualified players only. A number of regional qualifiers will be held across BC in the winter/spring 2012. We expect 200 players to compete in the BC Chess Challenge. The top player in each grade will qualify for the Canadian Chess Challenge being held in Halifax (May 2012).
The Canadian Open Chess Championships will be held in Victoria July 8-13 2012. Download Flyer Here. This is a must do for serious chess players. Open to all ages. A number of Grandmasters are expected to attend. There will be demos, lessons, blitz and bughouse tournaments and more.

Living Chess game July 1st 2011 at Market Square Watch 2 teams of 16 battle it out on a 24 foot X 24 foot chess board under the direction of World Champion Jason Cao and a worthy opponent. We will need 16 pawns, 4 rooks, 4 knights, 4 bishops, 2 Queens and 2 Kings. Pawns will receive a free shirt. Pawns must be <4'6" feet tall. Register on line here

Some great games on Sunday at the Victoria City Championships. The best young chess players in the city battled for trophies in one of the strongest City Championships ever held in Victoria.

The First Met Chess Club (junior chess) meets Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm. The club will not be meeting during the Holiday break and will re open Jan 6th 2009. See thechess clubpage for more details.
Entry fee for IJO tournaments $15 $10 for each additional sibling.
New player: Special one time $5 entry fee (IJO only). For players new to tournament chess. No previous CFC, CMA, USCF or other international chess organizations tournament experience.

championships) available to VJCS members only. Membership is $10 per
year. One or more parent may join. We encourage junior membership as

School teams may preregister as a group by email and pay $10 each for IJO events.

Chess at Willows Beach is now over until June 2010. This year we hosted chess from mid May to the end of September. This was the 7th year of outdoor chess at Willows beach. We have not been rained out yet!

Saturday June 28th A good turnout this year and great weather on a cloud free day. 22 players in the blitz tournament. Josh Renaud was 1st place. Malcolm Bowles 2nd.
The Sportmanship trophy was awarded to TianTian Geng in 2008.
The Victoria Junior Chess Society is comprised of a group of volunteers and is registered under the B.C. Societies Act as a non-profit society (established 2000). We promote chess in the Greater Victoria Area and its various School Systems (K-12), by:
Organizing Island Junior Open Chess tournaments and Regional Championships
Organizing workshops, seminars and classes for novice, intermediate and advanced players
Introducing young players to competitive tournament chess
Assisting with the development of School Chess Clubs
Organizing other related chess events for children/students
Introducing and teaching chess basics to children
The Victoria Junior Chess Society supports and will assist, upon request, any individual school, teacher or group with junior chess activities and instruction.
