The Victoria Chess Challenge was held Feb 20.  50 players took part in this qualifier for the BC Chess Challenge being held in Richmond April 9th 2011. List of Qualifiers   Results and ratings for all players will be available at http://www.chesstalk.com/elo/pub/ March 1st

Boy's Under-10 winners: Jason Cao (Canada, gold), Jeffrey Xiong (US, silver),
Abhimanyu Puranik (India, bronze), and Bhaskar Gupta (India, 4th).

Another surprise was the Boys Under-10, which included top-seed American Samuel Sevian, rated 2105, yet which was won by unrated Canadian Jason Cao, who had a remarkable campaign throughout.

October 30th 2010  Jason Cao is World Champion!   Jason Cao from Canada pulled an all-important victory in the last round (Round 11), against the direct rival for top places Cameron Wheeler, and thanks to the draw on the top board, he earned the gold medal on better additional criteria. Jeffrey Xiong (USA) takes home the silver, and Puranik Abhimanyu edged his fellow Indian Gupta Bhaskar to claim the bronze.

 

October 27 2010  Report from Round 8 Jason Cao (CAN) is unstoppable in the Open U10 section. After yet another victory and a draw by direct competitors Puranik Abhimanyu (IND) and FM Tin Jingyao (SIN), now Jason Cao is a full point ahead of the group. http://wycc2010.chessdom.com/

Jason Cao has checked his way to Greece.

The nine-year-old Saanich resident is in Halkidiki, Greece for a two-week stay where he will represent his country and his age group at the World Youth Chess Championships.

Chess Camp at Sea  Join GM Emil Anka on the Chess Camp at Sea.  With stops in Alaska and Victoria. A special event is being planned to welcome the chess camp participants on their stop in Victoria on August 27

6th Annual Victoria Junior Chess Beach Party and Awards

Saturday June 28th 2008.  A good turnout this year and great weather on a cloud free day.  22 players in the blitz tournament. Josh Renaud was 1st place. Malcolm Bowles 2nd.  Link to photos.

 

This year the Sportmanship trophy was awarded to TianTian Geng.

 

Events included a Blitz tournament. Awards for Outstanding player, Most improved, Etc. Pizza Lunch. All chess players all ages and family invited. Out of town guests welcome. RSVP victoriajuniorchess@gmail.com with the number of guests.

Regional Chess Championship Sunday February 24, 2008 - regional qualifier for BC Chess Challenge

Attendance was up this year for the lower Vancouver Island Regional Qualifier for the Provincial Grade Championship to be held Satruday March 8th at BCIT. You are qualified to play if you scored 50% or greater in your grade or if you placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in your grade. You are also qualified if your brother or sister qualified. In order to play in the provincial you must be qualified and pre registered. March 16th Book Launch, The Ultimate GM Duncan Suttles Games Collection, Vols.1-3 (details)

At 1:00 pm, Grandmasters Duncan Suttles and Yasser Seirawan will give a tandem (alternating move) simultaneous against juniors rated under 1800.

At 3:30 pm, Grandmasters Duncan Suttles and Yasser Seirawan will give a tandem (alternating move) simultaneous against adults, selected juniors and juniors who won or drew in the first simultaneous.

A hot dog and pop/juice lunch will be provided for juniors.

At 7:00 pm, a social gathering (business attire) will convene, for both chess players and non-chess players. Food will be provided. Chess players may continue to play in the front area of the Bridge Centre. The event ticket $10. Pre-ordered books will be available for pickup and signing. Pe-order the book here.

Mark your calendars for the Victoria Chess Festival - Easter Weekend 2008 (March 21 - 24). The Victoria Chess Festival will be held at the Hotel Grand Pacific and will include the Grand Pacific Open, the Grand Pacific Scholastic Open (March 21) and the Grand Pacific Bughouse (Mar 24). The movie Arctic Tale will be showing this weekend at the Cinecenta Theatre at UVIC. Arctic Tale was co-directed by Sarah Robertson and Adam Ravetch (parents of Cooper Ravetch - a Victoria junior chess player). It looks like a great family movie. www.Arcticbearproductions.com

 

 

 

 

September 1st 2007

Malcolm Bowles has been awarded a $250 scholarship from the Victoria Junior Chess Society. Malcolm has been playing chess competitively since 1998 and was a consistent top player at Junior Chess events over that time period. Malcolm is starting his undergraduate studies at UVIC this September. Congratulations Malcolm!

2008 Victoria Chess Festival Mar 21 - 24

Once again, this coming Easter, we will be holding the Victoria Chess Festival.

There are three events:

The Grand Pacific Scholastic Chess Tournament; A 5 round Active Swiss in 3 sections for Juniors. Mar 21

The Grand Pacific Open; The main event. A 6 round FIDE & CFC rated Swiss with a $2000 guaranteed prize fund.

Open Bughouse Tournament; aka Siamese chess. Something a little more light hearted. Mar 24

And once again, a special rate has been arranged for accommodation at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

And yes, you can play in more than one event.
