BC Chess Challenge

The 2012 BC Chess Challenge (provincial championship by grade) will be held at the Hotel Grand Pacific on Friday April 6 2012. The BC Chess Challenge is open to qualified players from regional qualifiers that will be held in numerous locations in BC prior to the championship. See http://www.victoriajuniorchess.com   http://www.bcjuniorchess.com and/or http://chess-math.org/ for tournament dates and information. Any K-12 student from any region of BC can play in one or more of these qualifiers. The Victoria qualifiers will be held February 19th (Victoria Chess Challenge) and Sunday March 4th. Both of these tournaments will be held at UVic.

 

The Grand Pacific Open starts at 6pm on April 6 just after the BC Chess Challenge. Players may want to take a 1/2 point bye for round 1 and join into the GPO on Saturday at 12 noon. More info on the GPO below and at the following link www.grandpacificopen.com

Lunch:  approx 12:15-1:00 Cafe and restaurant on site. Some quick options available in the cafe. Check with TD for your section's start time.

You may want to bring snacks. No food in the tournament hall. Water will be provided. If you bring a bag lunch please find a place nearby to enoy your food. There is a nice park (Confederation Park and the Legislature grounds) next door where you could enjoy some fresh air between rounds.

The BC Chess Challenge is a Qualifier for the CANADIAN CHESS CHALLENGE being held in Halifax this year.

 

Bus/van transportation from the Swartz Bay terminal will be provided for players and their families (free for players, $10 round trip for non players). We recommend you travel to Victoria the day before the BC Chess Challenge to ensure your child is well rested and not late due to weather, traffic or other delays. The tournament starts at 10:30 am on April 6th.

The 6th Annual Grand Pacific Open Chess Tournament starts at 6pm on Friday April 6 (just after the BC Chess Challenge finishes).  BC Chess Challenge participants are encouraged to join in for the Grand Pacific Open. Non chess players can enjoy a relaxing long weekend in Victoria. Early April is peak flower season and is a great time to visit Victoria. Take in the Royal BC Museum, enjoy a movie at the IMAX Theatre or just enjoy long walks through the quiet neighbourhoods next to the Hotel Grand Pacific.

 

Draft Bus Schedule (space for luggage may be limited, pretend you are flying and pack light).  Look for a van or school bus with chess boards on it.
